Description

This unit provides an introduction to the presentation and diagnostic features of autism across the lifespan. Across the course of the unit, students will develop knowledge of neurotypical and neurodivergent lifespan development, as well as the diagnostic features of autism at key developmental stages (toddlers and preschoolers; school-aged children; adolescents and adults).

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) identify indicators of, and distinguish between, neurotypical and neurodivergent development at key developmental stages across the lifespan (toddlers/ early childhood, childhood, adolescence and adulthood); (2) identify and describe key diagnostic features of autism at key developmental stages across the lifespan (toddlers/early childhood, in the school years, adolescence and adulthood); (3) identify the assessment methods and tools that may be used in diagnostic assessments for autism at each developmental stage across the lifespan (toddlers/early childhood, in the school years, adolescence and adulthood); and (4) outline the clinical information that can be gathered from different assessment approaches and explain why this information is important for autism diagnostic assessments at each stage across the lifespan (toddlers/early childhood, in the school years, adolescence and adulthood).

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: students will be given advanced standing for this unit after successfully completing PSYCM512, PSYCM513, and PSYCM514. Further information is available in the unit outline.
