Description

This unit presents social work methods using an integrated approach to practice in diverse arenas by applying knowledge and skills appropriate to interpersonal, group and community settings along with their application in both general and particular contexts of practice. Students become familiar with the purposeful use of self, working systemically and thinking critically.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) analyse how and when theories, knowledge bases and knowledge sources inform practice; (2) critique a range of specific social work methods and techniques appropriate to area of practice, such as individual, group and community work; (3) examine a choice of methods to apply in specific situations with individuals, groups and communities; (4) critique social work assessment processes to a range of situations involving individuals, groups and communities; (5) demonstrate how selected methods for assessment and practice meet ethical standards as specified by the AASW; and (6) demonstrate professional attitudes, workplace behaviours and communication skills appropriate to the profession of social work.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) group presentation; (2) written case study; (3) written assignment; and (4) professional behaviour assessment. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the professional behaviour assessment component.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
