Unit Overview


This unit develops students' professional level practical skills in the investigation of significant places to assess their condition and to devise appropriate repair and maintenance schedules to conserve their cultural value and to keep them in use. Taking a building construction approach to the conservation of significant places, the unit examines the evolution of construction and material types in Western Australia and looks at the range of structural problems and material defects that they present for conservation. The unit covers methods of investigating and recording the physical condition of significant places, the principles of appropriate repair, and the practical processes of developing schedules of work for the level of restoration, repair and maintenance required to ensure conservation of cultural value and ongoing use. A series of case studies are used to demonstrate the practices that produce best results in the project management of conservation works.

Students are able to (1) apply their research and investigation skills and their understanding of building construction systems and materials to the efficient assessment and reporting of the condition of significant buildings and (2) demonstrate an understanding of the principles of appropriate repair, and a practical approach to developing schedules of work for conservation works and ongoing preventative maintenance for places of cultural significance.


Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) group field work exercises; (2) individual report based on group field work; and (3) major assignment. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
