Content
This is an advanced unit in invertebrate diversity and relationships, and comprises three modules. The first module establishes the relationships between the 30+ phyla and the remaining two investigate the function of invertebrates in functional and practical settings. Teaching is by lectures, discussion groups, practical classes and online learning. The learning integrates across all facets of the teaching. The assessment elucidates not only the content learned but also understanding of the physiological, ecological, phylogenetic and systematic principles involved. The unit provides a strong advantage to those students intending to progress to higher degree studies, and also those intending to seek employment in the conservation and consultation-based industries, both private and governmental.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) gain an understanding of the diversity of form and function of invertebrates; (2) understand the evolutionary links among the invertebrate phyla and the link with vertebrates; (3) learn to recognise invertebrate animals and assign them to phylum and class (sub-class and/or order in selected cases; (4) learn to recognise and describe the distinguishing characteristics of each of these taxonomic levels; (5) learn to use keys, requiring working knowledge of the structural features used in such keys; (6) dissect an invertebrate animal and recognise the major organ systems and their relationships and connections to the rest of the body; (7) use compound and dissecting microscopes to view whole animals and slide material to the best advantage; and (8) use computers and computer-based programs as skills for part of the learning process and for revision and self-assessment.
Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) phylogeny Essay Part 1 and 2; (2) a laboratory report; and (3) an examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.
