Units available in Online Restricted mode have been adapted for online study only for those students who require the unit to complete their studies and who are unable to attend campus due to COVID border closures. To be enrolled in a unit in Online Restricted mode, students should contact their Student Advising Office through askUWA and include which of the below criteria applies:

  • You are a student who is currently offshore and unable to enter Australia.
  • You are a student in Australia who is impacted by state or regional border closures.

CHPR4550 is a capstone experience in the Chemical Engineering major in the BE(Hons) and should be taken in your last year of study. Working in a team, typically with four to six members, you will be required to integrate and apply knowledge and skills acquired in earlier units to a substantial real-world design challenge in chemical engineering. Teams are supervised by an academic and/or industry mentor. Teams are responsible for managing their project as well as reporting against milestones and preparing the necessary design documentation. The academic objectives of the project are to lead students through a systematic engineering design and synthesis process and to better prepare them for professional practice as engineers. The focus of the unit is on teamwork skills and the design process.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) apply engineering synthesis and design processes relevant to chemical engineering; (2) seek out the requirements and associated resources to assess the scope, dimensions, scale of effort and indicative costs of a complex engineering project; (3) apply technical knowledge, appropriate tools, apply relevant standards and regulations, and problem-solving skills to achieve a desired outcome to satisfy user requirements; (4) apply project management tools, ethical conduct, and professional accountability to the planning and execution of a design project; (5) critically analyse design inputs, processes and outputs; and (6) communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately using written, oral and visual means.
Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) reflective writing and (2) project deliverables. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the project deliverables component.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.

The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
