Unit Overview
- Description
In this unit, pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of how mental health and emotional wellbeing affects key outcomes in students at the primary level.
Pre-service teachers will develop a theoretical understanding of child mental health problems and how this presents in real world contexts. Aspects of developmental psychopathology and the family and social systems influence will also be introduced. The contribution of critical antecedents in childhood in the development of adverse mental health conditions will also be examined in detail.
Pre-service teachers will be equipped with the skills needed to recognise mental health problems at the classroom level, so that appropriate referrals and support can be initiated so that these children and their families receive the appropriate assistance they require. Teacher wellbeing will also be examined.

- Outcomes
Students are able to (1) explain conceptualisations of psychopathology with respect to children, mental health and emotional wellbeing; (2) identify and describe family-related, social, and educational implications arising from various psychopathologies and adverse mental health or emotional wellbeing in primary level students; (3) identify and describe the factors that underpin mental health and emotional wellbeing in children; and (4) analyse the impact that teacher wellbeing can have in schools, and how teachers can manage their own mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) group assignment and (2) case study. Further information is available in the unit outline.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted
Not available for self-enrolment. Students access this mode by contacting their student office through AskUWA. 100% Online Unit.
NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
