Unit Overview
- Description
This unit is part of the mathematics specialisation and will assist preservice teachers to develop an advanced understanding of research-informed advanced pedagogical practices and content knowledge so that they can become future school leaders in the curriculum area of mathematics.
In this unit, preservice teachers will gain in-depth knowledge about evidence-based mathematics instructional strategies to teach students in Foundation to Year 3. Preservice teachers will learn how to locate, interpret, apply and communicate relevant research findings. Preservice teachers will examine current trends in mathematics classroom practice for F – 3 and analyse the evidence to support the efficacy of these trends. Preservice teachers will use recent evidence syntheses to determine which evidence-based instructional strategies are most suitable for young students and how these can be implemented in a structured sequence to cater for all students within an MTSS framework.
There will be a strong emphasis on differentiation to match mathematical learning progressions, starting at the planning stage, to ensure that all students attain and retain fundamental mathematics knowledge. Knowledge of data-based decision making gained during EDUC3016 will be extended to working with colleagues and allied health personnel to monitor student progress using evidence-based problem-solving procedures within an MTSS framework. Preservice teachers will learn how to clearly and succinctly communicate their knowledge of evidence-based mathematics practices to professional colleagues, parents and other stakeholders in an engaging and appropriate manner.

Students are able to (1) identify and apply current trends in classroom mathematics practice in the early years of schooling, including the role of technology; (2) critically analyse and justify classroom instructional practices drawing on research evidence; (3) apply evidence-based instructional strategies to teach fundamental mathematics knowledge to young students in a structured planned sequence; (4) identify and plan for appropriate differentiation to cater for all students within an MTSS framework; and (5) compose professional communication for colleagues and others that explains and justifies evidence-based instructional practices.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) report and (2) teaching and assessment plans. Further information is available in the unit outline.

- All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
- Visit the Essential Textbooks website to see if any textbooks are required for this Unit. The website is updated regularly so content may change. Students are recommended to purchase Essential Textbooks, but a limited number of copies of all Essential Textbooks are held in the Library in print, and as an ebook where possible. Recommended readings for the unit can be accessed in Unit Readings directly through the Learning Management System (LMS).
- Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
