Description

This unit introduces concepts in finance. Topics covered include capital markets; interest rates; valuing projects and financial instruments (bonds, equity, derivatives); capital budgeting; risk and return relationships, diversification and portfolio theory, with a particular focus on global finance.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) discuss the objectives of financial management; (2) explain the Time Value of Money concept and apply it to solve financial problems; (3) evaluate capital investment proposals and understand the implications and limitations of the main evaluation methods; (4) value both debt and equity securities; (5) demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of risk, risk aversion and diversification; and (6) explain the relation between returns and risk proposed by the asset pricing models.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) participation and practice; (2) project; and (3) final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
