Unit Overview

Description

This unit introduces students to core skills for curators across the gallery and museum sector: communication, research, collaboration, negotiation and management. Drawing on a variety of lectures, practical exercises, site visits and presentations from external experts, for instance, on psychological or legal aspects of curatorial work, this unit introduces students to the key functions these skills play in the day-to-day work of curators. Students will explore how to present research to diverse audiences, from scientific committees to sponsors or a wider public. They will also gain an understanding of the management and people skills required for the effective production of exhibitions or permanent displays in art galleries and museums. Blending academic rigour with practical expertise in communication, collaboration and leadership, this unit seeks to foster skills crucial for a future career in museum or gallery curation.
