Description

This unit covers the basics of how human language interacts with automation to deliver a product, AI, that is revolutionising the world. It also focuses on how humans interact with automation and how linguistic interaction is being shaped by these new modes of behaviour. The objective of this unit is to educate students on the role of language in how AI technologies are designed and deployed.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain the role of human language in the design, development, and deployment of AI technologies; (2) analyse how linguistic principles underpin key aspects of AI, including speech recognition, natural language processing, and machine learning; (3) evaluate the impact of automation on human linguistic behaviour and communication patterns; (4) critically reflect on the ethical, social, and cultural implications of language-based AI systems, with particular attention to bias, inclusion, and accessibility; and (5) explain how language mediates human–AI interaction in real-world applications (e.g. virtual assistants, chatbots, translation tools).

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) written assignments; (2) final exam; and (3) tutorial participation. Further information is available in the unit outline.
