- Increasingly, work occurs across organisational, regional, or national boundaries in teams and other collaborative efforts that are enabled by communication technology. Leading and working in these collaborations requires skills in cross-cultural communication, technology use, and dynamic planning and design. The inability to lead collaborative efforts is a major factor leading managers to derail off the track to higher level positions. This unit addresses global collaboration using a multilevel, multidisciplinary and multicultural approach. It is highly interactive and involves a variety of experiences, including exercises, case studies, projects and discussions. The unit proceeds through a step-by-step examination of a comprehensive model that characterises global collaborations as dynamic systems consisting of (1) individual level, collaboration level and organisational level inputs; (2) complex interaction and adjustment processes; and (3) individual level, group level and organisational level outputs such as creativity, innovation, productivity, financial return and impact. Specific attention is given to issues such as who must communicate with whom and how; cross-functional, cross-team, cross-organisation and cross-national interfaces; cultural integration and conflict resolution; building links outside the collaboration to required resources; and technology use.
- Students are able to (1) explain the components that comprise global collaborations; (2) identify key factors that influence performance in them; (3) develop skills in diagnosing opportunities and threats that face such collaborations; and (4) gain leadership and teamwork expertise by working in complex collaborations and analysing their own experience in and contributions to them.
- Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) best practice paper; (2) team case analysis; and (3) individual analysis. Further information is available in the unit outline.
