Unit Overview

Description

In this unit, students develop technical competence and skills relevant to the ventilation planning of underground mining operations. They understand the key considerations associated with the development of an underground mine and its ventilation requirements. They gain experience in identifying the major problems associated with ventilation planning and in the use of systematic methods to resolve these issues.

Topics covered and discussed in this unit are the fundamentals of mine ventilation, including principles of airflow, gas, dust and pollutants transport, ventilation network theory and mine ventilation system design, with the emphasis on analysis, systems design and practical application.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate critical thinking and information literacy on mine ventilation engineering; (2) apply engineering synthesis and design processes relevant to mine ventilation engineering; (3) appraise the fundamental ventilation principles for underground mining operations; (4) design a ventilation system for a particular underground mine; (5) analyse electrification in underground mining operations and its effect on mine ventilation designs; and (6) communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately using written, oral and visual means.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) individual portfolio; (2) quizzes; and (3) final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
