Unit Overview

Description

This practical unit consolidates and builds upon essential skills and concepts learnt in Contemporary Popular Music Principal Studies 2. Students further develop their own unique Contemporary Popular music practice, including performance, songwriting, live sound, and event promotion. Students will work collaboratively to produce their own portfolio in either performance and/or songwriting, while also learning techniques in production, and booking and promotion of live performances. This unit prepares students in technical and performance skills required for the next unit in the Principal Studies sequence.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate proficiency with the fundamental techniques of live music production; (2) apply theoretical knowledge of and practical proficiency in the fundamentals of booking and promoting live performance; (3) apply effective strategies for self-directed collaborative music making appropriate to this level of tertiary study; and (4) analyse the processes involved in creative development.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) portfolio; (2) collaborative music project; and (3) journal. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the portfolio component.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
