Unit Overview

Description

This unit will cover calculation approaches appropriate for offshore geotechnical design, focusing on the approaches that are most applicable to offshore renewable energy structures. Students will learn how to use calculation tools for various offshore design problems including approaches that are based on elasticity, subgrade reaction (p-y), upper and lower bound theorems, finite element limit analysis and finite element analyses. Through a range of offshore design examples, students will critically assess which tool or tools are the most appropriate for different design scenarios, with consideration of the soil type, available site characterisation data and the level of design uncertainty.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) identify appropriate geotechnical calculation approaches for different offshore boundary value problems; (2) compute foundation and infrastructure response using a variety of geotechnical calculation approaches; and (3) assess the level of uncertainty in a calculated response for a given site characterisation dataset.
