Unit Overview
- Description
This unit covers the practical aspects of audiological assessment and aural rehabilitation skills of non-complex adults, the critical and analytical thinking used to select audiological tests, integration of audiological results and providing feedback to patients and report writing.
This unit also covers introduction to reflective and reflexive practices in audiological practice and introduces students to cultural awareness in Audiology.
Students must pass the clinical viva in order to pass the unit.

Students are able to (1) conduct (using simulation software) pure-tone audiometry of non-complex adults independently; (2) demonstrate an understanding of prescribing hearing devices, providing informational counselling and hearing aid handling skills for non-complex adults under guidance; (3) develop critical and analytical thinking to select appropriate tests and interpret and integrate findings across the test battery for non-complex adults under guidance; (4) analyse audiological results to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with their non-complex adults and colleagues under guidance; (5) recognise the role of cultural awareness when dealing with variations in populations under guidance; (6) identify reflective practices in audiological practice under guidance; and (7) conduct (in clinic) basic audiological assessments of non-complex adults by undertaking otoscopy, pure tone-audiometry, tympanometry, and speech audiometry under guidance.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) reflective & reflexive practice; (2) clinical diaries; and (3) clinical viva. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the clinical viva component.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

- equivalent to 3 hours per week as a mix of lectures/tutorials plus 100 hours of supervised clinical placements at audiology clinics
delivery of theoretical material occurs in intensive 5-week courses in the first 5 weeks of the semester and supervised external clinical placements in the remainder of the semester.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted

NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
