Unit Overview
- Description
This unit provides students with an understanding of key debates on gender and International Relations. Through a detailed engagement with feminist perspectives, students consider where women are located in the practice and theorisation of International Relations. Students examine how gender shapes national identities and discourses, as well as the relationship between gender and security, with a particular focus on violence during armed conflict. Through this unit, students learn what feminist approaches contribute to our understanding of world politics, and the implications of identity and difference in the theory and practice of International Relations.

Students are able to (1) describe the differing theoretical approaches to understanding the role of gender in International Relations; (2) critically analyse influential ideas and concepts in understanding the significance of gender in International Relations; (3) creatively apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to independently and collaboratively address challenges and issues in how gender is practiced and theorised in International Relations; (4) competently apply basic Political Science and International Relations research methods and skills to designing and executing research about gender in International Relations; and (5) effectively communicate knowledge, ideas, analyses and arguments about gender in International Relations in a range of formats..

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) research essay and (2) analytical exercise. Further information is available in the unit outline.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted

NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
