Unit Overview

Description

This unit introduces students to various issues facing the world. It aims to help develop students' critical abilities in the English language when considering global matters. Its purpose is to develop communication, thinking and reasoning skills in the context of contemporary issues contextualised through the students' lives. The unit will examine key global themes such as sustainability, equality and conflict through a multidisciplinary approach that includes cultural, political and environmental factors.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) understand and evaluate different perspectives on issues of global significance; (2) identify appropriate academic texts in order to present clear arguments and counter-arguments in written submissions; (3) understand the importance of culture in building their own relationships with themes of global significance; (4) develop digital literacy skills to research broad topics of interest; and (5) demonstrate an appreciation of interdisciplinary approaches to key global themes.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) assignments; (2) group presentation; and (3) essay. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
