Unit Overview

Description

This unit introduces students to counselling and intervention skills when working with children and their parents. Students will also gain an understanding of the role of culture in development, and culturally competent care. The course will introduce students to common assessment tools and techniques, as well as diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis. Students will also develop formulation and treatment plans.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) describe the cultural competence and cultural safety models in the context of child and adolescent psychology.; (2) apply international taxonomies (DSM 5, ICD 11) to identify the major disorders that impact children and adolescents.; (3) assimilate information from various sources, including key assessment tools, research and processes, to support diagnosis and case planning for children and adolescents.; and (4) employ CBT techniques to treat common mental health issues in children and adolescents.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) viva voce; (2) case study; and (3) reflective essay. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the viva voce, case study, and reflective essay components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
