Unit Overview

Description

This unit is taken over two successive semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students work independently on the unit, which has no lecture or tutorial components. Drawing on their own intellectual resources and research training, and making constructive use of the feedback provided by their research supervisor, students must complete a research thesis in an area deemed relevant to their specialist master's degree.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) produce, under supervision, an independent research project in an area relevant to their specialist master's degree; (2) develop skills critical to future employment as scientist-practitioners by preparing, designing, analysing and reporting this research; (3) achieve the competency to review the literature relevant to a problem in their field, design and conduct an appropriate study and report it to high professional standards; (4) advance their general abilities to interpret and evaluate the research of others; and (5) become familiar with the ethical considerations bearing on research in their field.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: PSYC5610 (Part 1)—oral presentation of research proposal and evaluation of dissertation progress report form. This details the progress of the research, which includes the milestones achieved and planned and a proposed study schedule. The report must be assessed and approved by the supervisor for entry into Part 2. Assessment continuing.. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Students taking this unit are expected to have an approved dissertation project by the first day of semester one in 2020. Students should contact the unit coordinator if they do not have a project.
