Unit Overview

Description

In this unit students undertake supervised research activities on an individual or small-group basis within a discipline area of Business, Design, Education, Humanities, Law, Music or Social Sciences.

The student's understanding of the research topic is developed through an individually guided program of research, reading and attendance at occasional research seminars and meeting within the School. As part of the unit students may also make an oral presentation to academic staff or prepare a written report which will be structured to reflect the requirements of the project.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate a good understanding of the literature related to their project's research topic through practical application; (2) demonstrate a good understanding of practical research skills through their work in applying those skills; (3) demonstrate an understanding of how research ethics inform practical research work; and (4) participate at an informed level in discussions of the theoretical; underpinnings of their research topic..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) practical research work contributing to a defined research project and (2) contribution to discussion and development of research project as part of the research team. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

One-on-one and small group interaction with academic staff, specifically interaction with academic project leader/leaders as required by the nature of the project.

Students are recommended to purchase Essential Textbooks, but a limited number of copies of all Essential Textbooks are held in the Library in print, and as an ebook where possible.   • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
