Unit Overview

Description

This unit provides students with the opportunity to undertake an independent desktop review of a contemporary sports science topic with direct relevance to enhancing professional practice in human performance settings. Students will critically appraise and synthesise scientific literature to evaluate current knowledge, identify gaps, and translate evidence into practical recommendations for coaches, athletes, or practitioners. The primary focus is on producing a coherent, scholarly review paper that bridges research and real-world application, supporting evidence-informed decision-making in the field.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) formulate a relevant research question in contemporary sports science

; (2) conduct a comprehensive literature review using scientific databases; (3) critically appraise and synthesise peer-reviewed literature; and (4) communicate findings in a scholarly format appropriate for academic publication.

This unit is structured around independent student-led research, guided by scheduled check-ins with academic supervisors. Students will attend a three seminars (weeks 1, 4, 8) on advanced literature search techniques, scientific writing, and topic refinement. Key milestones include submission of a topic proposal, annotated bibliography, and a final review paper. The total time commitment to the unit will be 150h.
