Unit Overview

Description

This elective unit is only available to elected Guild and Faculty society or club office bearers with approval of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) on advice from the Guild President. The objective of the unit is to enable students who are incumbent office bearers to enrol in a unit for academic credit in recognition of their service contribution to the Guild and the University. Office bearers play a vital leadership role within the student body through which they learn, develop and apply a complex mix of knowledge and skills including communication, interpersonal, decision making, prioritisation, planning and budgeting knowledge and skills, as well as goal setting and project management. Office bearers generally benefit from community recognition and this has the potential to greatly enhance their employment and leadership opportunities in the future. This unit recognises both the service contribution of Guild and student society/club office bearers to the Guild and University and the learning experience of this role. By enrolling in this unit, students will have time freed up to enable them to make a strong contribution, minimise any possible adverse impact on their regular studies and, for some students, enable them to maintain full time enrolment.

Includes: Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Education Council President, Societies Council President, Public Affairs Council President, Environment Officer, International Students' Service Director, Sports Representative, Welfare Officer, Women's Officer, and Faculty Society and Club Presidents where the aims and objective of the club reflect the ethos of UWA and illustrate a contribution to the Guild, University, and the community; and where the club has over 100 members and runs at least five events of a Medium or Major classification each year, each of which includes a comprehensive event management plan.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) actively undertake an official Guild office bearer leadership role for the period of one semester; (2) actively participate in a Guild leadership/handover course of 3.5 days contact; (3) demonstrate responsibility and citizenship by using knowledge and skills to contribute positively to the Guild and University environment; and (4) argue from an evidence base about the significance of their service experience with reference to important Guild/University issues.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) self reflection report/presentation and (2) UWA Student Guild assessment rubric completed by the Unit Coordinator on advice from the Student Guild. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the self reflection report/presentation component.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Contact hours

All students participate in a UWA Student Guild (Guild) leadership/handover program of 3.5 days (26.5 hours) contact. In addition, all students meet with their Guild supervisor and unit supervisor at least 25 hours per semesters. All students are voting Guild office bearers and participate in a minimum of 100 hrs per semester work during University, Guild meetings and official duties. This is a total of 150 hours work equivalent to at six-point unit.

This unit is only available for enrolment by elected UWA Guild office bearers by approval of the Dean, Coursework Studies in consultation with the UWA Guild President.
