Applicability of the Student Rules, policies and procedures

1.(1) The Student Rules apply to students in this course.

(2) The policy, policy statements and guidance documents and student procedures apply, except as otherwise indicated in the rules for this course.

Academic Conduct Essentials and Communication and Research Skills modules

2.(1) Except as stated in (2), a student who enrols in this course for the first time irrespective of whether they have previously been enrolled in another course of the University, must undertake the Academic Conduct Essentials module (the ACE module) and the Communication and Research Skills module (the CARS module).

(2) A student who has previously achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the CARS module is not required to repeat the module.

(3) A student must successfully complete the ACE module within the first teaching period of their enrolment. Failure to complete the module within this timeframe will result in the student's unit results from this teaching period being withheld. These results will continue to be withheld until students avail themselves of a subsequent opportunity to achieve a passing grade in the ACE module. In the event that students complete units in subsequent teaching periods without completing the ACE module, these results will similarly be withheld. Students will not be permitted to submit late review or appeal applications regarding results which have been withheld for this reason and which they were unable to access in the normally permitted review period.

English Language competency requirements

3. To be considered eligible for consideration for admission to this course an applicant must satisfy the University's English language competence requirement as set out in the University Policy on Admission: Coursework.

Admission requirements

4. To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have—

(a) a relevant bachelor's degree¹, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; and

(b) (i) the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 60 per cent in the Level 3 units; or

(ii) at least three years of relevant full-time professional experience; or

(iii) evidence of adequate research outputs, as recognised by UWA.

¹A relevant bachelor's degree includes a Biomedical Sciences or Bachelor of Science in a biomedical or biological discipline, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Science, or a bachelor's degree in applied biomedical science or public health (medical technology, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and veterinary science).

Admission ranking and selection

5. Where relevant, admission will be awarded to the highest ranked applicants or applicants selected based on the relevant requirements.

Articulations and exit awards

6.(1) The following courses form part of an articulated sequence:

• 51330 Graduate Diploma in Infectious Diseases (48 points)
• 52530 Master of Infectious Diseases (96 points)

(2) Students may require to substitute MICR5834 Tropical Travel and Remote Area Infectious Diseases and MICR5836 Public and Enviromental Health Microbiology, for MICR5831 Molecular and Cellular Microbiology and MICR5846 Molecular Epidemiology and Microbial Communities

Course structure

7.(1) The course consists of units to a total value of 48 points.

(2) Units must be selected in accordance with the course structure, as set out in these rules.

Satisfactory progress

8. To make satisfactory progress a student must pass units to a point value greater than half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

9. A student who has not achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the Communication and Research Skills module (the CARS module) when their progress status is assessed will not have made satisfactory progress even if they have met the other requirements for satisfactory progress in Rule 8.

Progress status

10.(1) A student who makes satisfactory progress in terms of Rule 8 is assigned the status of 'Good Standing'.

(2) Unless the relevant board determines otherwise because of exceptional circumstances—

(a) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the first time under Rule 8 is assigned a progress status of 'On Probation';

(b) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the second time under Rule 8 is assigned a progress status of 'Suspended';

(c) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the third time under Rule 8 is assigned a progress status of 'Excluded'.

11. A student who does not make satisfactory progress in terms of Rule 9 is assigned the progress status of 'On Probation', unless they have been assigned a progress status of 'Suspended' or 'Excluded' for failure to meet other satisfactory progress requirements in Rule 8.

Award with distinction

12. This rule is not applicable to this course.

Deferrals

13. Applicants awarded admission to the course are entitled to a deferral of up to 12 months, as per the University Policy on: Admissions (Coursework).

Supplementary assessment

14. Academic Council has granted permission for an opportunity for supplementary assessment to be granted to a student who—

(a) obtains a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in one of the following units:

MICR5829 Foundations of Infectious Diseases

MICR5842 Principles of Infection and Immunity

MICR5830 Principles of Mycology and Parasitology;

or

(b) obtains a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in a unit in which they are currently enrolled and which is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

6.(1) This course has the following exit award:

• 92310 Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pathology (48 points)

(2) A student who withdraws from the Master of Clinical Pathology course before completing it, but has completed 48 points from the list of first year units, may apply to the School to be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pathology.

Course structure

7.(1) The course consists of units to a total value of 96 points which must include course core units and specialisation units. The course comprises the following specialisations:

• SP-ANTPY Anatomical Pathology
• SP-CLBCH Clinical Biochemistry
• SP-CLIMM Clinical Immunology
• SP-CLMBY Clinical Microbiology
• SP-HMTGY Haematology
• SP-MOLEC Molecular Pathology

(2) Units must be selected in accordance with the course structure, as set out in these rules.

and

(c) all units above Level 3 completed at this University that are credited to the master's degree course.

Deferrals

13. Applicants awarded admission to the course are entitled to a deferral of up to 12 months, as per the University Policy on: Admissions (Coursework).

Specialisations

14.(1) This course leads to multiple specialisations.

(2) Students in the course by coursework only, must take specialisation-specific units comprising three specialisations in Year 2.

(3) Students in the course by coursework and dissertation, must take specialisation-specific units comprising two specialisations in Year 2.

Advanced standing

15. Owing to accrediting body requirements, advance standing is not permitted towards the requirements of this course.

Note: This course is only available to re-enrolling students.

Research project

15. Research project

Students who request approval to undertake a research project in this course must—

(i) have a weighted average mark of at least 70 per cent in 42 points of Level 4 and 5 units in the first year of the course. The weighted average mark will be calculated using the highest marks achieved in units comprising 42 points in the first year.

(2) A student must successfully complete the ACE module within the first teaching period of their enrolment. Failure to complete the module within this timeframe will result in the student's unit results from this teaching period being withheld. These results will continue to be withheld until students avail themselves of a subsequent opportunity to achieve a passing grade in the ACE module. (3) A student who has previously achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the CARS module or the ISE module is not required to repeat the relevant module.

English Language competency requirements

5. To be considered eligible for consideration for admission to this course an applicant must satisfy the University's English language competence requirement as set out in the University Policy on Admission: Coursework.

Admission requirements

6.(1) To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have—
(a) achieved an ATAR of at least 92, or equivalent as recognised by UWA; and meet the additional requirements stated at (2) below

or

(b) an assured pathway offer;

or

(c) a place in a relevant UWA access program.

(2) A scaled mark of at least 50% in ATAR Chemistry or equivalent or higher.

(3) A scaled mark of at least 50% in ATAR Mathematics Applications or equivalent or higher.

(4) Applicants without Mathematics Applications ATAR or Chemistry ATAR can be admitted but are required to successfully complete bridging units in their first year.

Admission ranking and selection

7. Where relevant, admission will be awarded to the highest ranked applicants or applicants selected based on—

(a) the awarding of an assured pathway place in Medicine, Dentistry, or Podiatric Medicine;

or

(b) ATAR or equivalent selection rank for applicants who do not meet 7.(a), in line with the quota for the Medical Science major

Transfer Requirements

8.(1) A student enrolled in an undergraduate degree course at UWA may apply to transfer into this course if they satisfy the following conditions:

(a) the student has not commenced their final semester of enrolment;

and

(b) the course transfer is undertaken within the two transfer windows in each academic year;

and

(c) there are no quotas preventing the student from enrolling in a major or unit in which the student seeks to enrol; and
(2) (a) have completed a minimum of 24 points of study in their current course and achieved a WAM of at least 80; and

(b) have met any subject prerequisites for their intended majors; and

(3) 8.(1) and 8.(2) do not apply to this course. Entry via course transfer is not permitted.

Course structure

9.(1) The Undergraduate Bachelor's degree consists of:

(a) 144 credit points (normally 24 units), which will include:

(i) a degree-specific major chosen from the list below:

(1) MJD-MEDSI Medical Science

(2) MJD-IMSCP Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice

(3) MJD-DENTS Integrated Dental Sciences

(4) MJD-PHMSC Podiatric Health and Medical Sciences

and

(ii) no more than 72 credit points (normally 12 units) of Level 1 units; and

(iii) at least 72 credit points (normally 12 units) of Level 2 or Level 3 units, including at least 36 credit points (normaly 6 units) of Level 3 units; and

(iv) any relevant foundation units.

and(2) Students may choose to undertake a minor, provided the student will be able to complete all nominated majors and minors within 144 credit points.

Satisfactory progress

10.(1) To make satisfactory progress a student must pass units to a point value greater than half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

(2) A student who has not achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the CARS module or the ISE module when their progress status is assessed will not have made satisfactory progress.

(3) A student who fails a unit twice is not permitted to enrol again in that unit unless the relevant board approves otherwise.

Progress status

11.(1) A student who makes satisfactory progress is assigned the status of 'Good Standing'.

(2) Unless the relevant board determines otherwise because of exceptional circumstances —

(a) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the first time under Rule 10(1) is assigned a progress status of 'On Probation';

(b) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the second time under Rule 10(1) is assigned a progress status of 'Suspended';

(c) a student who does not make satisfactory progress for the third time under Rule 10(1) is assigned a progress status of 'Excluded';

(d) a student who does not make satisfactory progress under Rule 10(2) is assigned a progress status of 'On Probation' unless they have been assigned a progress status of 'Suspended' or 'Excluded' for failure to make satisfactory progress under Rule 10(1).

Deferrals

12. Applicants awarded admission to the course are entitled to a deferral of up to 12 months, as per the University Policy on: Admissions (Coursework).

Students are not normally allowed to defer a place in the Doctor of Medicine; students are only offered a place in the Doctor of Medicine in the year in which they are first offered.

Additional rules

Study Abroad

13.(1) Students enrolled in this course may only engage with study abroad activities through short term programs falling outside the University semester and examination periods, except for students undertaking the MJD-MEDSI Medical Science major who are permitted to undertake a semester long exchange (subject to rule 13.(2) below).

(2) Students pursuing studies in the areas of medicine, dentistry or podiatry must seek advice from their allocated advising office before undertaking any study abroad activities.

Major Selection

14.(1) Students can only undertake the MJD-IMSCP Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice if awarded an assured pathway to Medicine at the point of admission.

(2) Students can only undertake the MJD-DENTS Integrated Dental Sciences major if awarded an assured pathway to Dentistry at the point of admission.

(3) Students can only undertake the MJD-PHMSC Podiatric Health and Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice if awarded an assured pathway to Podiatric Medicine at the point of admission.
