Applicability of the Student Rules, policies and procedures

1.(1) The Student Rules apply to students in this course.

(2) The policy, policy statements and guidance documents and student procedures apply, except as otherwise indicated in the rules for this course.

Academic Conduct Essentials and Communication and Research Skills modules

2.(1) Except as stated in (2), a student who enrols in this course for the first time irrespective of whether they have previously been enrolled in another course of the University, must undertake the Academic Conduct Essentials module (the ACE module) and the Communication and Research Skills module (the CARS module).

(2) A student who has previously achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the CARS module is not required to repeat the module.

(3) A student must successfully complete the ACE module within the first teaching period of their enrolment. Failure to complete the module within this timeframe will result in the student's unit results from this teaching period being withheld. These results will continue to be withheld until students avail themselves of a subsequent opportunity to achieve a passing grade in the ACE module. In the event that students complete units in subsequent teaching periods without completing the ACE module, these results will similarly be withheld. Students will not be permitted to submit late review or appeal applications regarding results which have been withheld for this reason and which they were unable to access in the normally permitted review period.

English Language competency requirements

3.(1) To be considered eligible for consideration for admission to this course an applicant must satisfy the University's English language competence requirement as set out in the University Policy on Admission: Coursework, except as otherwise indicated in the rules for this course.

(2) Applicants presenting with the IELTS Academic require an overall score of at least 7.0 and no band less than 6.5.

Admission requirements

4. To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have—

(a) the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine from this University, or equivalent as recognised by UWA;

or

(b) a Bachelor of Dental Science or Doctor of Dental Medicine, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA;

(c) (i)a bachelor's degree in a health, biomedical, or biological sciences related discipline from this University or another recognised institution; and

(ii) in the case of graduates from a three-year undergraduate degree course, at least one year of professional experience;

or

(c) completed the Graduate Certificate in Health Professional/Professions Education or the Graduate Diploma in Health Professional/Professions Education from this University with the equivalent of at least 70 per cent in all core units

Admission ranking and selection

5. Where relevant, admission will be awarded to the highest ranked applicants or applicants selected based on the relevant requirements.

Articulations and exit awards

6.(1) The following courses form part of an articulated sequence:

• 90210 Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education (24 points)
• 90670 Master of Health Professions Education (96 points)

(2) A student who withdraws from the Master of Health Professions Education course before completing it, but after fulfilling the requirements of a lesser award in the above sequence, may apply for the relevant award.

Course structure

7.(1) The course consists of units to a total value of 96 points.

(2) Units must be selected in accordance with the course structure, as set out in these rules.

Satisfactory progress

8. To make satisfactory progress a student must pass units to a point value greater than half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

9. A student who has not achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the Communication and Research Skills module (the CARS module) when their progress status is assessed will not have made satisfactory progress even if they have met the other requirements for satisfactory progress in Rule 8.

Progress status

10. Satisfactory progress

A student must provide particulars of the progress and results of the research and other agreed tasks to their supervisors from time to time and whenever requested.

A student will be deemed to be making satisfactory progress when, in the assessment of their supervisors and Graduate Research Coordinator, they have—

(a) submitted a satisfactory Research Proposal within the agreed time;

(b) continued to complete sufficient work, at a satisfactory standard, within agreed times;

and

(c) continued to submit reports and other requirements, at a satisfactory standard, within agreed times.

When a student's supervisors and Graduate Research Coordinator assess that a student is not making satisfactory progress they will inform the Graduate Research School. The Graduate Research School will—

(a) inform the student in writing that they are deemed as being at risk of not meeting the course requirements for continuation;

and

(b) request that in three months the student submits an Interim Report addressing the specific concerns raised by the supervisors and Graduate Research Coordinator.

On receipt of the Interim Report the Graduate Research School will determine whether the student's candidature in the PhD can continue.

Approved leave (suspension of candidature) and extension

The Board of the Graduate Research School, on written application, may grant a period of approved leave, called a suspension of candidature, in a master's degree by research course which, unless the Board of the Graduate Research School in recognition of exceptional circumstances permits otherwise, will not exceed one year throughout the duration of candidature.

In addition to the one-year maximum period of suspension of candidature provided for in Rule 24, the Board may, on written application, permit during the course of candidature either—

(a) up to 12 months' leave for pregnancy and childbirth, for each pregnancy;

or

(b) up to 12 months' parental leave for the primary carer of a child or children.

The Board of the Graduate Research School, in recognition of exceptional circumstances, may approve an extension not exceeding one year to the maximum period of candidature for masters' degrees by research as set out in these Rules.

Periods of leave granted under Rule 24 or Rule 25 are not counted for the purposes of calculating the time limit for master's degrees by research.

11. A student who does not make satisfactory progress in terms of Rule 9 is assigned the progress status of 'On Probation', unless they have been assigned a progress status of 'Suspended' or 'Excluded' for failure to meet other satisfactory progress requirements in Rule 8.

Award with distinction

12. To be awarded the degree with distinction a student must achieve a course weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 80 per cent which is calculated based on—

(a) all units above Level 3 attempted as part of the course that are awarded a final percentage mark;

(b) all relevant units above Level 3 undertaken in articulating courses of this University that are awarded a final percentage mark;

and

(c) all units above Level 3 completed at this University that are credited to the master's degree course.

Deferrals

13. Applicants awarded admission to the course are entitled to a deferral of up to 12 months, as per the University Policy on: Admissions (Coursework).

Additional rules

Prerequisites

14. Unless the School Learning and Teaching Committee permits otherwise in recognition of exceptional circumstances, students are required to complete all Master of Health Professions Education core units and achieve the equivalent of at least 70 per cent in all core units, in order to enrol in the Master of Health Professions Education thesis unit.

Progression

15. Students must achieve the equivalent of at least 70 per cent in all core units in the core units of the course in order to proceed to the Master of Health Professional Education thesis unit.

Credit

16.(1) For students other than those admitted under Rule 4(c), credit granted for work completed as part of an approved course at this or another recognised tertiary institution will not exceed 24 points.

(2) Unless the Faculty permits otherwise in recognition of exceptional circumstances, credit is normally granted only for coursework completed within the past five years.

Thesis submission and examination

17.(1) Submission and examination of the thesis is governed by the relevant master's degree by research rules for courses administered by the Board of the Graduate Research School ¹, ²

(2) Following classification, the Health Professions Education Learning & Teaching Committee will award a percentage mark for the Thesis, based on the classification report.
