      Definitions

      Unless the context suggests otherwise—

      a core unit means a unit which is a compulsory unit in a course;

      an option means a unit chosen from among a range of given options;

      an elective means a unit which a student may choose freely from among the units available in the University, subject to the rules for the unit concerned and to any Faculty rule which governs the number of points that must or may be counted towards the degree in question from units of a specified level;

      the level of a unit indicates the amount of prior knowledge or maturity of learning required to study it successfully;

      the Faculty includes a body or person to whom the Faculty has delegated responsibility for a function covered by the rule concerned.

      Courses marked with an asterisk (*) are only available to re-enrolling students.

        Applicability of the Student Rules, policies and procedures

        1.(1) The Student Rules apply to students in this course.

        (2) The policy, policy statements and guidance documents and student procedures apply, except as otherwise indicated in the rules for this course.

        Academic Conduct Essentials module

        1.A(1) Except as stated in (2), a student who enrols in this course for the first time irrespective of whether they have previously been enrolled in another course of the University, must undertake the Academic Conduct Essentials module (the ACE module).

        (2) A student who has previously achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the ACE module is not required to repeat the module.

        (3) A student who has not achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the ACE module when their progress status is assessed will not have made satisfactory progress even if they have met the other requirements for satisfactory progress in the rules for this course.

        (4) A student who does not make satisfactory progress in terms of (3) is assigned the progress status of 'On Probation'.

        Admission

        2. To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have the requirements set out in (a), (b) or (c) which follow, or the equivalent as recognised by the Faculty:

        (a)(i) a bachelor's degree of this University; and

        (ii) completed a postgraduate course in education requiring at least one year of full-time study; and

        (iii) either two years' full-time relevant professional experience or demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty;

        or

        (b)(i) the Bachelor of Education of this University; and

        (ii) either two years' full-time relevant professional experience or demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty;

        or

        (c)(i) a degree requiring at least four years of full-time study; and

        (ii) two years' full-time professional experience in the field of education; and

        (iii) demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty.

        Course structure

        3. The course consists of units to a total value of 72 points comprising—

        (a) all units in Table a [Master of Special Education (by thesis and coursework) core units]—66 points

        and

        (b) one unit from Table c (Master of Education options)—6 points.

        Satisfactory progress

        4.(1) Subject to (2), to make satisfactory progress in a calendar year a student must pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

        (2) Satisfactory progress in the supervised research thesis component of the course is determined having regard to the report of the student's supervisor.

        Progress status

        5.(1) Students in the course by coursework, or in the coursework component of the course by thesis and coursework, who fail to make satisfactory progress for the first time are assigned the progress status of 'Suspended' by the Faculty;

        (2) Students in the course by coursework, or in the coursework component of the course by thesis and coursework, who fail to make satisfactory progress for a second time are assigned the progress status of 'Excluded' by the Faculty.

        (3) Students who are enrolled in the thesis component of the course by thesis and coursework who do not submit an annual report or whose annual report is not considered by the Dean to be satisfactory—

        (a) are assigned the progress status of 'On Probation' by the Faculty;

        (b) are required to report to the relevant course coordinator prior to re-enrolment; and

        (c) may have conditions applied to their enrolment by the Faculty.

        Progression

        6.(1) Students are not permitted to proceed to EDUC57201/EDUC57212 Master's Thesis unless they have achieved an average mark of at least 65 per cent in three coursework units including a mark of at least 65 per cent in EDUC5631 Approaches to Research.

        (2) The Faculty may permit a student who does not achieve the required standard set out in (1) to complete the course for the degree of Master of Education by way of coursework.

        Credit

        7.(1) The Faculty may grant credit for coursework units to a total value of 12 points in the Master of Special Education (by thesis and coursework) course.

        (2) Within the overall credit limit, credit may be granted for work completed in courses provided by professional providers or private educational institutions to a maximum value of six points.

        Articulation

        2. The Graduate Diploma in Educational Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation articulates with the Master of Education in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation by coursework.

        Admission

        3.(1) To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have the requirements set out in (a), (b) or (c) which follow, or the equivalent as recognised by the Faculty; or the requirements set out in (d):

        (a)(i) a bachelor's degree of this University; and

        (ii) completed a postgraduate course in education requiring at least one year of full-time study; and

        (iii) either two years' full-time relevant professional experience or demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty;

        or

        (b)(i) the Bachelor of Education of this University; and

        (ii) either two years' full-time relevant professional experience or demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty;

        or

        (c)(i) a degree requiring at least four years of full-time study; and

        (ii) two years' full-time professional experience in the field of education; and

        (iii) demonstrated research capacity acceptable to the Faculty;

        or

        (d) a graduate diploma that articulates with the Master of Education in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation.

        (2) Applicants for the course by thesis and coursework who have completed a graduate diploma referred to in (1)(d) must have achieved an average of at least 65 per cent in three coursework units including a mark of at least 65 per cent in EDUC5631 Approaches to Research.

        (3) The Faculty may accept into the course by way of thesis and coursework an applicant who—

        (a) has completed at least three units towards a graduate diploma referred to in (1)(d) or towards another graduate diploma of the Faculty that articulates with a master's degree course; and

        (b) has completed units relevant to the requirements of the master's degree course; and

        (c) has achieved an average mark of at least 65 per cent in three coursework diploma units including a mark of at least 65 per cent in EDUC5631 Approaches to Research.

        External study

        4. The Faculty may, in appropriate circumstances, permit a student to complete the course at an institution approved by the Academic Board for all or part of the prescribed period of study.

        Course structure

        Thesis and coursework

        5. The course by way of thesis and coursework consists of units to a total value of 72 points comprising all units in Table a [Master of Education in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation (by thesis and coursework) core units].

        Coursework

        6.(1) The course by way of coursework consists of units to a total value of 48 points comprising—

        (a) all units in Table b [Master of Education in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation (by coursework) core units]—30 points

        and

        (b) three units from Table c [Master of Education in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation (by coursework) options]—18 points

        Satisfactory progress

        7.(1) Subject to (2), to make satisfactory progress in a calendar year a student must pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

        (3) A student may apply to transfer to the course by way of thesis and coursework if they achieve an average mark of at least 65 per cent in three coursework units including a mark of at least 65 per cent in EDUC5631 Approaches to Research.

        Credit

        10.(1) Subject to (3), the Faculty may grant credit—

        (a) in the course by way of thesis and coursework, for coursework units to a total value of 12 points;

        (b) in the course by way of coursework, for coursework units to a total value of 18 points.

        (2) Within the overall credit limit, credit may be granted for work completed in courses provided by professional providers or private educational institutions to a maximum value of six points.

        (3) Subject to the provisions of University Policy, students who have completed a graduate diploma which articulates with this course are credited with all units completed in the diploma course.

        Award of graduate diploma

        11. Students who withdraw from the course before qualifying for the degree but after satisfying the requirements of an articulated graduate diploma may apply to the Faculty to be awarded the relevant diploma.

        Admission

        2.(1) To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have a bachelor's degree of this University, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty.

        (2) Applicants with qualifications from overseas institutions where English is not the medium of instruction must provide evidence of English language competency equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.5 overall with no band lower than 7.0 and no less than 8.0 in Speaking and Listening.

        (3) Applicants whose first language is not English, but who have degrees from institutions where English is the medium of instruction, may be required to provide further evidence of English language competency.

        3.(1) The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) course consists of units to a total value of 96 points comprising—

        (a) all units in Table a [Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) core units]—90 points

        and

        (b) one unit from Table b [Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) options]—6 points.

        (2) All students are required to pass a test of Teacher Language Competency Skills.

        (3) Students will not be permitted to exceed the total number of points prescribed for the course, unless the Faculty permits otherwise in exceptional circumstances, in accordance with University Policy.

        Credit for previously completed work

        4.(1) The Faculty may grant credit for units, excluding the Professional Practice units1, up to a value of 12 points on the basis of previously completed units of study.

        (2) Within the overall credit limit, credit may be granted for work completed through Continuing Education at this University to a maximum value of 12 points.

        (3) Students who are permitted to transfer from the Graduate Diploma in Education course at this University to the Master of Teaching course are granted credit for all units completed in the Graduate Diploma in Education course.

        Substitution of units

        5. The Faculty may permit the substitution of other units to a maximum value of 12 points for core units or options to the same value excluding the Professional Practice units.1

        Failure to attend or to complete prescribed work of a unit

        6.(1) The Faculty may prohibit a student from undertaking further study or examinations in a unit if the student—

        (a) fails to attend the prescribed classes, lectures, seminars or tutorials for the unit; or

        (b) fails to sit any examinations required in the unit; or

        (c) fails to complete assignments and other prescribed work for the unit at a standard acceptable to the Faculty.

        (2) A student who is prohibited from undertaking further study or examinations in a Professional Practice unit1 is not permitted to re-enrol in the unit concerned unless the Faculty approves otherwise.

        Failure to pass a Professional Practice unit 1

        7.(1) Students who do not pass a Professional Practice unit1 will have their case considered by a committee comprising—

        (a) the Dean of the Faculty;

        (b) the Director of Teaching; and

        (c) the Deputy Dean of the Faculty.

        (2) The committee will take into account all relevant information and recommend to the Faculty that the student—

        (a) repeat the Professional Practice unit; or

        (b) repeat the Professional Practice unit following completion of specified additional relevant work; or

        (c) not be permitted to re-enrol in the course.

        (3) If the Faculty permits a student to repeat a Professional Practice unit, it will determine whether the unit is to be repeated in the same or a subsequent year taking into consideration the student's overall performance in the course concerned.

        Satisfactory progress

        8.(1) Subject to (2), to make satisfactory progress in a calendar year a student must pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

        (2) To make satisfactory progress in the year in which a student is enrolled in a Professional Practice unit1 the student must, in addition to passing units to the value of at least half the total points value of units in which they are enrolled, pass the Professional Practice unit(s) in which they are enrolled.

        Progress status

        9.(1) Students who pass the Professional Practice unit(s)1 but do not pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units in which they are enrolled are assigned the progress status of 'Suspended' and are not permitted to re-enrol for a period of one year.

        (2) Students who pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units for which they are enrolled but who fail a Professional Practice unit1 are, if the Committee described in Rule 7 so recommends under that Rule, assigned the progress status of 'Excluded' and are excluded from further study in the course.

        (3) Students who do not pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units for which they are enrolled and who fail a Professional Practice unit1 are assigned the progress status of 'Excluded' and are excluded from further study in the course.

        (4) Students who fail to make satisfactory progress twice are assigned the progress status of 'Excluded' and are excluded from further study in the course.

        Award of Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies

        10. A student who withdraws from the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) course before qualifying for the degree but after satisfying the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies as set out in Rule 3 of the rules for that course may apply to the Faculty to be awarded the diploma.
