EDUC5472 Mathematics Curriculum II

Content This unit focuses on the active teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary school, building on the knowledge, skills and competencies required by teachers of secondary school mathematics which were developed in EDUC5462 Mathematics Curriculum I. Students explore current best practice in teaching both higher-level content knowledge to more able students and general mathematical proficiency to lower achieving students. A key theme in the unit is teaching for growth through reflective teaching practice and improving teaching quality.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of how secondary students learn mathematical concepts and skills; (2) demonstrate further development of a conceptual framework for effective learning and teaching of mathematics, appropriate for the secondary school; (3) demonstrate a repertoire of learning and teaching strategies relevant to the secondary mathematics curriculum; (4) demonstrate applied knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and the Western Australian curriculum, syllabus and learning outcomes for mathematics, and scope and sequence documents for mathematics years 7–12; (5) demonstrate sound pedagogical content knowledge for secondary school mathematics, through the development of sequential lesson plans and programs; (6) implement evidence based teaching resources, including information and communication technology (ICT) and assistive technologies, and specifically the Casio ClassPad calculator, to enhance student learning in mathematics; (7) apply a range of assessment and evaluation processes and strategies as appropriate for senior secondary students of mathematics; (8) differentiate curriculum in lesson plans and programs, to address the mathematical learning needs of students with a wide range of abilities and from a wide range of social and cultural contexts; (9) demonstrate an awareness of state, national and international professional associations for teachers of mathematics and relevant research centres; (10) reflect on personal and professional development and plan for future learning as a professional teacher of mathematics; (11) use research findings to improve practice; and (12) plan for literacy learning.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) reflective teaching practice; (2) planning for quality teaching; and (3) professional conduct. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite standard(s) for the reflective teaching practice, planning for quality teaching, and professional conduct components of the unit, as specified in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.

Prerequisites: EDUC5462 Mathematics Curriculum I; EDUC5481 Professional Practice I and enrolment in the Graduate Diploma in Education or Master of Teaching (Secondary)
Co-requisites: EDUC5482 Professional Practice II or EDUC5500 Professional Practice B
Advisable prior study: at least six units of mathematics, with at least two units at Level 3
