EDUC5502 Teaching Mathematics in the Early Years

Content This unit is delivered as a series of interactive workshops with an emphasis on developing students' mathematics content knowledge and pedagogy, and improving attitudes towards mathematics. Taking into account the development and characteristics of children, emphasis is placed on a range of teaching strategies that use concrete materials to engage children in mathematical learning, along with the use of storybooks (hard copy or electronic) to assist children to engage with, and make sense of, mathematics. Students become familiar with the three content strands (number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability) and the proficiency strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. They also become familiar with the place of mathematics within the Early Years Learning Framework. Students begin to develop a resource file and professional library as a means of developing their own mathematics content knowledge.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate an awareness that mathematical knowledge and skills are developmental, and that this knowledge influences the planning of units of work; (2) develop a rationale for teaching and learning early childhood mathematics which synthesises and critiques competing orientations and theoretical frameworks; (3) plan and evaluate student centred instructional sequences that incorporate appropriate teaching strategies and resources for early childhood mathematics for effective and engaging learning; (4) develop skills to evaluate, use and create resources for teaching and learning mathematics, including information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other educational technologies, taking into account the development and characteristics of children; (5) analyse and apply the appropriate mathematics curriculum for early childhood learners (Australian Curriculum: Mathematics in the Early Years Learning Framework); (6) demonstrate sound specialist content knowledge in relation to teaching mathematics to early childhood learners; (7) demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches; (8) develop an awareness of diverse student learning needs through the planning of differentiated resources; (9) communicate effectively and professionally (in writing, orally and non-verbally) with peers, University staff and other professionals; and (10) demonstrate an ability to analyse, synthesise and apply cognitive, creative and technical knowledge and skills in early childhood contexts.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) assignment 1: children's knowledge of number and (2) assignment 2: planning and programming document. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite standard(s) for the assignment 1: children's knowledge of number and assignment 2: planning and programming document components of the unit, as specified in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
