Content Students acquire an understanding of the fundamental principles of hydraulics, and develop the ability to apply this knowledge to solve a wide range of engineering problems. The topics covered include the equations of fluid motion in bulk and differential form; forces on structures; dimensional analysis in fluid mechanics; experimental design; an introduction to turbulent flow; boundary layers; and pipe flow.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) appreciate the meaning and relevance of mechanical fluid properties; (2) compute the direction and magnitude of forces on submerged objects; (3) understand the fundamental conservation laws (mass, momentum, energy) of fluid mechanics and apply them to analyse engineering problems; (4) write, and understand the meaning of, the important dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics; and (5) design laboratory models whose fluid mechanics replicate those of the prototype.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) in-class tests and (2) a fluid mechanics photography competition. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Prerequisites: completion of 18 points of the Level 1 and Level 2 units taken from the degree-specific Engineering Science major, including MATH1001 Mathematical Methods 1 or (MATH1011 Multivariable Calculus and MATH1012 Mathematical Theory and Methods)
