ENVE4405 Ecological Engineering

Content This unit investigates the local, regional and global context of industries dependent on fundamental ecological processes including aquaculture, fisheries, forestry, farming, wastewater reprocessing, wetlands and other specialist bioindustries such as biofuel production. Students explore how manipulation of the biogeochemistry of natural systems allows us to potentially create a vast range of sustainable products, but often with unpredicted outcomes and impacts, on both constructed and natural systems. In each system, students first define a set of core biological and ecological process controls, and then explore how harnessing of key processes via manipulation and technological intervention can set in motion changes in biochemical pathways leading to production of a needed product or process.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team; (2) write concise technical reports; (3) give a professional oral presentation; (4) manage group discussion; (5) locate and evaluate sources of information including references and appropriate data; (6) quantify temporal and spatial scales of importance for biophysical coupling and ecological process; (7) quantify the temporal and spatial scales of importance for the interaction between natural and built environments; (8) carry out ecological engineering design including appropriate performance assessment methods; (9) integrate ecological engineering principles in engineering design; (10) carry out urban water-sensitive design with a focus on ecological engineering principles; and (11) perform ecological modelling.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) tutorial assignments and class discussions; (2) an individual design project; and (3) a final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is only available in this unit in the case of a student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
