Unit Overview

Description

This unit focuses on the development of knowledge and skills essential for establishing and maintaining productive and safe school learning environments. This includes understanding the significance and complexity of relationships with students, parents and colleagues. The importance of teacher behaviour and communication is also a component of this unit. Contemporary legal issues and responsibilities impacting upon the classroom teacher will be evaluated. Student wellbeing in the classroom and broader school environment is also examined.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate a sound understanding of the social and emotional development of adolescents; (2) investigate research evidence into motivation, engagement and classroom management; (3) demonstrate knowledge of fundamental classroom management strategies to create an effective and safe learning environment; (4) demonstrate an awareness of the legal issues that relate to the care and education of children; (5) develop effective communication that facilitates positive interactions and relationships with and between students, parents and colleagues; (6) synthesise a range of approaches to student wellbeing in the classroom and school environment; and (7) design a plan for strengthening student wellbeing and resilience.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) professional practice plan; (2) test case study of teacher legal responsibilities; and (3) wellbeing case study. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the professional practice plan, test case study of teacher legal responsibilities, and wellbeing case study components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
