Unit Overview

Description

This unit will provide students the background knowledge across pre-clinical scientific disciplines including anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and epidemiology. Learning will focus on the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems, with key pathologies and treatments highlighted for each system. Students will be able to integrate knowledge across disciplines.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain generic principles of normal and abnormal human structure, function and development of the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems; (2) outline the classification, epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of specified conditions within the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems; (3) discuss the common pathological manifestations of specified conditions within the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems; (4) outline therapeutic principles for specified conditions within the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems; and (5) discuss strategies for health promotion, screening and disease prevention for specified conditions within the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) final examination; (2) in-semester tests; and (3) written assignment. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Approved quota: 150—students who successfully complete Level 2 units within the MJD-MEDSI Medical Science major. All students will be able to progress.
