Unit Overview
- Description
Great characters are central to the success of a musical theatre production. Therefore, the choices that composers, librettists, and directors make to shape their character and bring them to life are central to the creative process.
In this unit, students will begin by analysing a selection of book musicals and jukebox musicals from a dramaturgical, musical, and choreographic perspective separately to understand how each aspect functions in these works. Students will then combine these analytical methodologies with in-class case studies and an independent research project. These studies will allow students to develop a deeper understand of musical theatre functions from a variety of perspectives. This unit is open to all students who have an interest in music.

Students are able to (1) discuss developments in book and jukebox musicals and identify stylistic characteristics of these works; (2) demonstrate critical reading, thinking, and communication skills in relation to musical theatre; (3) analyse compositional aspects of musical theatre; (4) analyse dramaturgical and choreographic aspects of musical theatre; and (5) relate knowledge of key musical theatre developments to relevant cultural and historical contexts.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) seminar activities; (2) research portfolio; and (3) test. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the seminar activities component.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted

NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
Multi-mode
