Unit Overview

Description

This unit builds on the knowledge and clinical skills including relevant concepts in the disciplines of Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry. Students gain understanding on abnormal growth and development and common health problems from birth to adolescence for both healthy children and children with special needs and evidence-based orthodontics treatment for uncomplicated cases. Students formulate and deliver a treatment plan for the individual child in Paediatric Dentistry clinics.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) diagnose normal from abnormal growth and development and common oral health problems from birth to adolescence for both healthy children and children with special care needs; (2) recognise the need for and refer for evidence-based orthodontics treatment for uncomplicated cases in cooperative children and adolescents; (3) formulate and deliver a comprehensive treatment plan for the individual child; (4) display professional behaviour in the educational and clinical settings,; (5) discuss challenges to professionalism and reflect on professional behaviours in the clinical setting; (6) display critical and insightful self-reflection of their own personal values, wellbeing, personal difficulties and professional performance; and (7) respond to professionalism challenges and insightful self reflection by implementing effective management strategies.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) written examination integrated Paediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics (Failed Component), SLO 1,2, 3; (2) written assessment Paediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics SLO 1, 2, 3; and (3) professional behaviour assessment. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the written examination integrated Paediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics (Failed Component), SLO 1,2, 3 and professional behaviour assessment components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
