Unit Overview

Description

This unit examines the genetic basis of the processes causing evolutionary change in natural and managed populations. It covers the factors that maintain genetic variation within populations and that cause genetic divergence among populations; the origin of species; methods of phylogenetic analysis; and sexual selection. The emphasis is on approaches for analysing the inheritance of quantitative traits and the application of evolutionary thinking to questions in genetics, molecular biology and ecology. The unit has the same theory as ANIM3362 Evolutionary Processes, but has an independent and different laboratory and discussion group program that focuses on molecular and quantitative genetic analysis, including measuring genetic change and heritability; models of molecular evolution; rates of molecular evolution and how they are influenced; and genome organisation and evolution.

Outcomes

Students are able to develop an understanding and appreciation of the factors that control genetic variability within and between species and populations, how this variability is calculated and its effect on the evolution of genomes, and consequently genome organisation.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) a laboratory report based on a class project (20 per cent); (2) participation in discussion groups (10 per cent); (3) a one-hour mid-semester examination (10 per cent); (4) a two-hour end-of-semester examination (40 per cent); and (5) a written essay based on discussion groups (20 per cent). Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
