Description

This unit introduces concepts and techniques of songwriting and arranging toward the composition of original contemporary songs. Topics include approaches to writing lyrics, melody, chord progressions, and song structure. Techniques of songwriting will be explored through creative practices, incorporating introductory contemporary analysis, music theory, and lyric writing modules. The unit aims to encourage students to find their own creative and unique approach to the art of songwriting and will culminate in writing one or more original songs.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of contemporary music song forms and materials; (2) create material in the form of melody, rhythm, harmony and lyrics; (3) arrange musical material to form complete song structures; and (4) critically reflect on musical arrangements and songs.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) tests and tasks; (2) practice assessment; and (3) creative project. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Advisable prior study
This unit will not require any prerequisites, however, as the unit builds upon previous experience in musical creation
or performance, prior experience playing a musical instrument (incl.
voice) is recommended for successful participation.

The unit aims to encourage students to find their own creative and unique approach to the art of songwriting and will culminate in writing one or more original songs.

It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
