Unit Overview

Description

Organisation-wide systems are used to support and promote safety for procuring, supplying, storing, compounding, manufacturing, prescribing, dispensing, administering and monitoring the effects of medicines. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care Medication Safety Standard requires considering and selecting the best management options for each individual wisely, by considering both non-drug and drug options. This unit will introduce students to the principles of whether a medicine is considered necessary and identification of the most suitable medicine, taking into account the individual, the clinical condition, the risks and benefits, dosage and length of treatment required, any coexisting conditions, and other therapies the individual may be undertaking. The unit will explore the impact of medicines including monitoring considerations, costs for the individual, the community and the health system as a whole. Ensuring medicines are used safely and effectively to achieve the best possible results will be explored through an interprofessional lens.
