Unit Overview

Description

This unit builds on the knowledge and skills gained in NURS5821 Nursing Practice 1 and NURS5831 Clinical Nursing Skills 1 and complements NURS5832 Clinical Nursing Skills 2, by introducing students to the dimensions of medical/surgical nursing of individuals. In particular, the unit focuses on diseases that have been identified as national health priority areas. Students have the opportunity to examine the principles and practices for facilitating the care of patients experiencing diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and arthritis. Incorporated into this unit is the practice of preoperative and postoperative care, admission and discharge planning, patient education and interprofessional practice.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) identify and discuss the national health priority areas; (2) identify and discuss the nursing care needs of patients with varying system dysfunction; (3) utilise strategies that facilitate a therapeutic nurse–patient relationship, refine patient assessment by using a comprehensive nursing framework and utilise data to develop a nursing care plan for patients experiencing acute or chronic illness; (4) demonstrate analytical skills by incorporating the theoretical principles of clinical decision making into patient care plans; (5) implement appropriate nursing assessment and care for patients on admission and discharge, including preoperative and postoperative management; (6) demonstrate competency in Australia Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) competencies standards for the Registered Nurse; (7) communicate verbally, and in writing, in a professional and culturally appropriate manner with the patient, their family and other members of the healthcare team; (8) demonstrate the capacity to work effectively as a member of the interprofessional team in the delivery of health care; and (9) discuss the socio/cultural and political factors that affect the medical/surgical healthcare needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Assessment

This comprises an examination (50 per cent), an assignment (40 per cent) and reflective journal (10 per cent). The hurdle requirements comprise a clinical performance appraisal tool (pass/fail), and a medication calculation test (must achieve 100 per cent). Students must meet the hurdle requirements to achieve a pass in the unit.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
