Unit Overview

Description

This unit includes lectures on haemopoiesis (how cells of the immune system develop and differentiate), T-cells and cytokines (how the immune system is regulated) and autoreactivity (immune responses to self proteins) in health and disease. Students are taught by physicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions, and by scientists engaged in research into disease pathogenesis. The unit is suitable for students interested in a career in clinical diagnostic laboratories or biomedical research.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) acquire a sound knowledge of the fundamentals of immunology and an appreciation of how this has an impact on clinical and laboratory medicine; (2) acquire an understanding of the use of diagnostic anatomical pathology in diagnosis and management of disease; (3) acquire methodological laboratory skills in immunology and pathology; (4) acquire skills in analysis and interpretation of scientific data; and (5) acquire skills in analysis, critique and presentation of selected topics.

Assessment

This comprises practical reports, assignments and a final examination.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Note
To take this unit, students must be enrolled in either the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine major or the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine specialisation of the Biomedical Science double major. Enquiries can be directed to Associate Professor Kimberley Roehrig.

Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
