Unit Overview

Description

This unit provides an introduction to the use of various new and traditional learning technologies in the design, development and production of science communication resources. Students create designs and prototypes for effective communication resources that may be print, video or computer/digitally based. The unit extends skills acquired in other science communication units.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) summarise the benefits of a systems development approach to learning technology development; (2) utilise a systematic development process to design an effective science communication resource that meets defined objectives; (3) develop, produce and present a concept design, storyboard and learning technology product/prototype to their peers; (4) demonstrate enhanced technical skills in using one or more learning technologies to solve a communication need; (5) demonstrate a basic understanding of the copyright and intellectual property laws as they pertain to resource development; (6) display time-management and organisational skills through the completion of assignment work by required deadlines; and (7) express an enhanced understanding of the importance and value of science and science communication to the community.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) attendance; (2) participation; (3) oral presentation about a relevant topic; (4) development of concept design; and (5) storyboard and production/prototype of a significant learning resource. This is a core unit in the Master of Science Communication and Education. It is a recommended elective for the Graduate Diploma in Science Communication and the Master of Science Communication.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
