Unit Overview

Description

This unit offers an introduction to three of the global languages of Arabic, Chinese, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It develops linguistic and cultural awareness of these major world languages, with a particular focus on their use in business, hospitality and tourism settings. Students achieve intercultural competence through cultural immersion, real-world application, and role-play activities. This unit leads to TRNS1002 Global Languages for Hospitality 2.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) identify major global languages of business, hospitality and tourism; (2) demonstrate intercultural competence; (3) use basic greetings and hospitality-relevant phrases; (4) show knowledge of different cultural norms (of address, gender, politeness, etc.); and (5) identify communication pitfalls (such as stereotypes, faux pas, misunderstandings, etc.) and display culturally appropriate conduct.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) in-class participation and (2) end-of-semester test. Further information is available in the unit outline.

BP073 Bachelor of Hospitality Management
Contact hours
18, including pre-recorded lectures (9 x 30 minutes per week over 9 weeks) and language classes (9 x 90 minutes per week over 9 weeks). Language classes involve a mix of formal instruction by the tutor, class discussions, and pair and group work on linguistic and cultural issues, with a special focus on global languages for business, hospitality and tourism. Student work on this unit will approximate 50 hours (including contact hours, self-study, online content, and assessments).
Note
This unit is only available to students enrolled in the BP073 Bachelor of Hospitality Management. It is designed for students who have no previous knowledge or only a slight knowledge of these languages.
