Unit Overview

Description

The study of human anatomy has underpinned studies in art across history and cultures. Art of anatomy today represents a foregrounding of the relationship between life sciences and art. This studio-based unit is designed to help students improve their understanding of the human body and develop an appreciation for its geometry, dynamic structure, movement, proportions and living systems inherent within. The primary tool of enquiry for this unit is drawing in its broadest scope. The unit focuses on recent advances in the life sciences both in theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thought, ethical and cultural issues and cross-disciplinary experimentation in art and science.

Students are introduced to the tradition of anatomical drawing through observation, precision drawing and lectures that discuss skeletal and muscular systems, human body proportions, human movement and expression. This unit is excellent for students within Fine Arts, Integrated Design, Music, Human Movement, Education, Medicine, Sciences and related fields.
