Content Important areas of podiatric medicine are explored in detail. This includes musculoskeletal medicine; the role of the podiatrist as a team member in managing sports-related injuries; and the diagnosis and podiatric management of common sporting injuries of the lower extremity, including the use of physical therapy modalities used in the treatment of soft tissue injuries of the foot and ankle. The growth and development of the paediatric patient are explored, together with diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the lower extremity in the young patient. Similarly, the special medical, nursing and social implications of ageing and aspects of geriatric medicine relevant to podiatry are discussed.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) describe the normal developmental milestones of the paediatric patient.; (2) discuss aetiology, clinical presentation, and management of common paediatric conditions such as metatarsus adductus, Talipes equino varus, skew foot and pes planus; (3) discuss specific podiatric pathologies of patients attending disability clinic including patients living with Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy; (4) describe the approach to the assessment of a patient presenting to disability clinic; (5) discuss and differentiate between various soft tissue tumours affecting the foot and ankle; (6) identify and discuss the use of appropriate scheduled medicines in general and specialist podiatric practice for selected conditions; (7) discuss various techniques used in myofascial therapy and physiotherapy applied to foot and ankle; (8) understand the indication and perform therapeutic injections in the foot and ankle; (9) understand common traumatic and sports injuries to the foot and ankle and their management; (10) research and discuss selected Podiatric pathologies and their managements; (11) research and discuss the evidence based practice management of common Podiatric pathologies; (12) discuss respectful and appropriate approach to working with patients (and their family) living with a disability; (13) discuss patient education and preventative care of various podiatric conditions; (14) describe the medical and social needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight patient and how these may impact on podiatric care; (15) discuss the role, regulations and registration for Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency; (16) discuss medical and legal issues in podiatric practice; (17) practice and develop the skill of a clinician who searches literature in order to implement evidence based practice; (18) demonstrate developing skills in being a mentor and seeking mentoring with peers; (19) practice teaching to colleagues by using interactive learning methods
demonstrate developing teaching skills using interactive learning methods with peers; (20) conducts and leads discussion of CBLs with other students; (21) describe the management of common podogeriatric conditions; and (22) demonstrate the ability to interpret pathology results in forming a diagnosis.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) case based learning (CBL) sessions; and (2) a two-hour end of semester written examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.
