Unit Overview

Description

This unit is an independent design project taken over two consecutive semesters. Parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students can commence the unit in either semester 1 or semester 2. Students undertake a supervised but independent design research project in which the investigation and critical design processes are formulated by the student. The project must have a theoretical and research base (Part 1), provide a comprehensive exploration of a landscape design brief and demonstrate a synthesis of critical design thinking.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate mastery of landscape architectural design skills needed in response to the requirements set out in the outcome of Part 1; (2) develop a sound conceptual design, with an appropriate level of technical resolution, depending on the nature of the project; and (3) clearly and effectively communicate design ideas in a professional manner.

Note
Independent design research project should demonstrate critical design processes and come with an innovative design solution. The project must provide a comprehensive exploration of a landscape design brief and demonstrate advanced design thinking. This part is a logical continuation of Part 1.
Format: combination of results of site analysis (diagrams, tables, photos, drawings), design and supportive written text, A3 paper. Illustrations or/and sketches (with titles and indication of reference sources) are important part.
Structure: introduction (identification on the main theme/problem and design intent), background information, possible methodology, design process, master plan (design scenario), details, perspectives, conclusion and the reference list.

  • All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are recommended to purchase Essential Textbooks, but a limited number of copies of all Essential Textbooks are held in the Library in print, and as an ebook where possible. Recommended readings for the unit can be accessed in Unit Readings directly through the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
