Unit Overview

Description

This unit involves Work Integrated Learning (e.g., industry placements) in a Clinical Exercise Physiology professional setting. This is completed under the supervision of an academic staff member or designate, who also holds the required industry certification and experience. Students will undertake WIL with industry based hosts, and based on their individual course plans. WIL will require face-to-face attendance with placements varying in length and weekly commitment.

Students undertake this unit as part of the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology in order to meet accreditation requirements , and ensure industry experience and competence.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) apply knowledge of the industry code of conduct and ethics, legislation and professional roles within clinical exercise physiology; (2) integrate evidence-based practice in decision making within clinical exercise physiology, and in line with industry standards; (3) critique safe and appropriate exercise-based client management within clinical exercise physiology, and in line with industry standards; (4) construct, evaluate and provide information and education to clients within clinical exercise physiology, and in line with industry standards; and (5) demonstrate competency and completion of required work integrated learning within clinical exercise physiology, and in line with industry standards.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) competency to practice and (2) industry skills modules (advanced + inclusive practice workshops). Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the competency to practice and industry skills modules (advanced + inclusive practice workshops) components.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Blended teaching model, including synchronous and asynchronous online learning and face-to-face applied workshops.
Weekly workshops will be conducted including required face-to-face sessions linked with preparation for practice and work integrated learning (WIL).

Note
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) schedules are developed at the outset of the course, but will be discussed with each student at the beginning of semester with adjustments made as necessary. There are some additional requirements needed in preparation for WIL which will be communicated to enrolled students via the UWA student email address.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
