Unit Overview

Description

This unit explores the chemistry of organic molecules fundamental to cell function before delving into larger macromolecules essential for building a cell: proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids. The role of key biochemical reactions is highlighted through an introduction to metabolic processes and cellular energy utilisation, so vital for cellular organisation, function and survival.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain the chemistry and elementary reactions of biologically relevant molecules.; (2) define the nomenclature, structure and properties of macromolecules.; (3) describe the role of macromolecules in cell structure and function.; (4) relate fundamental concepts of cellular energy utilisation.; and (5) generate, record and analyse data to demonstrate competence in using standard laboratory apparatus..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) online quizzes; (2) practical session quizzes and worksheets; and (3) an end-of-semester examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

BIOC1001 has a compulsory face to face laboratory component, which will need to be completed (at a later date) before a final grade can be awarded for the unit, if the unit is completed in an online mode.
