Unit Overview
- Description
This unit is taken over two successive semesters and parts 1 to 4 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students complete a year-long project of original research within biomedical sciences. Depending on the availability of suitable supervisors and research funding, projects available within the unit vary from year to year but typically range from projects focused on the basic and molecular aspects of drug action through to projects involving clinical trials and drug testing in human subjects.

Students are able to (1) write and compile a scientific dissertation in a format appropriate for the discipline; (2) show understanding of scientific methods relevant to their research project; (3) use statistical tools to assess reliability of their findings; (4) obtain, analyse and present original research data; (5) interpret and critically appraise their own and other research data; (6) explain the relationship of their findings to other work in the field; and (7) and respond to questions on their dissertation in a manner that shows mastery of the content and some knowledge of related areas..

- attainment of a weighted average mark of 65 per cent in Level 3 units in a relevant Biomedical Science major or equivalent level of achievement of biomedical science knowledge from another university
or in a related biomedical discipline relevant to the student's project of choice and the supervisor's expertise - Co-requisites

Students are recommended to purchase Essential Textbooks, but a limited number of copies of all Essential Textbooks are held in the Library in print, and as an ebook where possible. Online flexible
100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online timetabled
100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted
Not available for self-enrolment. Students access this mode by contacting their student office through AskUWA. 100% Online Unit.
NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
Multi-mode
Multiple modes of delivery. Unit includes a mix of online and on-campus study requirements. On campus attendance for some activities is required to complete this unit.
