Unit Overview

Description

In this unit students will participate in 25 days of teaching practice, in a primary classroom. This professional practice will contribute to students' development as a teacher through enhanced understandings of effective learning and teaching practices, assessment of student learning and the significance of working with parents/carers. Students will be under the guidance of a mentor teacher who will provide assistance in the development and execution of lessons, management of the classroom learning environment and other school-based activities.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate the capacity to plan effective teaching and learning activities for primary aged children.; (2) demonstrate the capacity to implement effective teaching and learning activities for primary aged children; (3) critically engage in the assessment of student achievement and the provision of appropriate feedback.; (4) critically engage in reflective practices to improve teaching; (5) evaluate and employ a range of appropriate teaching resources; (6) critically reflect on strategies for working with parents/carers; (7) critically evaluate strategies for working with professional and community organisations; (8) apply differentiate teaching activities to account for the learning needs of individual or groups of students; (9) apply feedback from school mentor to improve teaching practice.; (10) utilise strategies to manage student behaviour; (11) demonstrate strategies that support student well-being and safety; and (12) display professional and ethical conduct when working with school mentors, staff and school students.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) case study; (2) professional practice reflection; and (3) mentor report - primary. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the case study, professional practice reflection, and mentor report - primary components.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
