Unit Overview

Description

This unit involves Work Integrated Learning (e.g., industry placements) in an exercise physiology professional setting. This is completed under the supervision of an academic staff member or designate, who also holds the required industry certification and experience.

Students undertake this unit as part of the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology in order to meet accreditation requirements , and ensure industry experience and competence.

Additionally, this unit covers the fundamental training and industry requirements that students require prior to undertaking WIL in order to ensure safe and ethical practice.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) acquire knowledge of the industry code of conduct and ethics, legislation and professional roles; (2) demonstrate understanding of evidence-based practice in workplace decision making; (3) demonstrate knowledge of safe exercise practice including medications and delivering treatment plans; and (4) explain, advise, provide information and educate clients in a workplace setting.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: industry skills portfolio. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the industry skills portfolio component.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.

Incidental fees
Incidental student fees and charges are costs incurred by students as part of their studies at UWA that are in addition to their tuition fees (further information is available here).
Participation in this unit will incur the following incidental fee(s):
Industry Skills Portfolio (select items) (estimated cost - $120-200).
Contact hours
Blended teaching model, including synchronous and asynchronous online learning and face-to-face applied workshops.
Weekly workshops will be conducted including required face-to-face sessions linked with preparation for practice and work integrated learning.
Note
Industry placements will be discussed with each student and allocated on a set scheduled and programmed at a course level in order to meet learning and industry outcomes. Students are not required to facilitate their own placements.
