Content Students gain knowledge and understanding of evidence of issues for rural, remote and Indigenous oral health.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) understand the cultural particularities related to dental practice for the Australian Indigenous population; (2) understand the particularities emerging in rural and remote dental practice; (3) demonstrate effective and culturally secure communication with Indigenous Australians; (4) demonstrate working knowledge of the current status of Australian Indigenous health and oral health in rural and urban areas, and compare and contrast the health and oral health needs of Indigenous Australians versus non-Indigenous people in Australia; (5) analyse the impact of historical, geographical and sociocultural factors which contribute to the current health outcomes for Indigenous Australians living in rural areas; (6) propose culturally secure policies, strategies and methods of oral health service delivery for rural Indigenous populations based upon a community-wide disease prevention approach; and (7) determine the environmental, social and individual determinants of health and oral health in rural communities and analyse their impact on the status of rural dwellers' health and oral health, the presentation of patients and their reactions to health care and management, and propose effective strategies and programs for improving the oral health of rural communities..
