Minor Overview

About this minor
This minor combines practical performance studies in music with the study of music within moving images, and popular music within a global perspective. Students will rehearse and perform within a large musical ensemble, and EITHER consolidate pre-tertiary musical experience in musicianship and technical skills for their instrument, OR engage with a new instrument within a large ensemble. Students will also study and analyse the history, musical texts, technologies, and theories of popular music within global performative traditions, and the key concepts and aesthetics of music used in conjunction with moving images. Students wishing to enrol in MUSC1741 must successfully complete an audition before enrolling in this Minor. Students who later wish to transfer/upgrade from this Minor to a Major in Music must successfully complete a subsequent audition. For students taking a minor which shares units with their other unit sets (majors or minors): in order for minors to be recognised on academic and graduation documents, students may only have a maximum of one unit overlapping between their unit sets.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) consolidate essential musicianship, technical skills and repertoire in performance; (2) engage in meaningful group music making to develop transferable problem solving skills; (3) demonstrate an interdisciplinary perspective on local, national and global music contexts; (4) illustrate the ways in which music and cultural industries have been informed, modelled and shaped by globalisation; (5) synthesise and evaluate the broader aesthetic and contextual matters that condition our understanding of the relationship between music and visual media; and (6) critically analyse the function of music and sound in a range of visual media.
